Adequacy and Efficacy of All Common Environment Facilities including their evaluation

GEMI has taken up the task of monitoring the discharge point of Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP’s) across the Gujarat state. Under this, currently the Institute has monitoring discharge outlet of VAPI CETP for period of six months. It has an overall Comprehensive Environmental Pollution Index (CEPI) score of 88.09 which indicates that it is critically polluted.  In order to comply with the environment laws, it is mandatory for these industries to treat their effluent and achieve the prescribed standards before discharging the effluent into the environment. This shows the need for round the clock monitoring of recipient water body so as to keep a check to the extent of damage occurrence as well as to formulate appropriate remedial action plan, enabling abatement of pollution and restoring the environmental quality of surface water. Due to the large inherent variability, both spatial and temporal monitoring is necessary to study the water quality conditions after discharge of effluents. Also, establishment of specific monitoring objectives is essential for effective surface water quality monitoring program because of the presence of wide variety of parameters that can be measured as indicator of quality.

  • To assess the extent of deviation from desired output by comparing the analytical results with the effluents discharge norms/regulation laid by CPCB.
  • To check the water quality status and trend over time after discharging the effluent into the water body.
  • Ensure that the quality of recipient water body is maintained/improved.
  • Measure the effectiveness of the efforts undertaken to improve the water quality.
  • To provide technical and scientific guidance to the industrial units of the State for the prevention and control of pollution in consultation with other National & State level Institute, and Government wherever required.
  • To inform the concerned agencies regarding the performance of the CEF.

Project Benefits

The project will benefit the following:

  • Local people could know the actual quality of water they are using in their day to day purposes,
  • Concerned Government, Private Consultants and Research Scholars could access the data, as it generates a large quantity of reliable primary data,
  • Also, the concerned decision making authorities to frame new policies or amend the existing policies such as Surface Water Resource Policy, Industrial Policy, Pollution Control Policy, etc.

  • Periodic monitoring of the recipient water body at the discharge point.
  • The monitoring frequency would be once in every month.
  • Empirical equations would be established between the observed parameters.
