GEMI’s Laboratory: A Researcher’s Delight

Rigorous research is vital for to understand the root cause of any environmental problem and developing a perfect solution that can address the problem in a desired manner. To make this happen, GEMI has set up a state-of-the-art laboratory in Gandhinagar, which stands second to none, not only in the state of Gujarat or Indian continent, but also at Global level when it comes to carry out analysis of Air, Water & Soil samples and that too while strictly adhering to APHA and ISO standards..

The Laboratory of GEMI was recognised under the provisions of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974 and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1981 by the Forest & Environment Department, Government of Gujarat as “State Water Lab” and “State Air Lab” respectively vide Government of Gujarat’s notification no. GNV (30)/Env-10-2011-1941-E, dated 1st September, 2012.

The Senior Scientific Officer of GEMI has been appointed as Government Analyst under the provision of Water Act 1974 vide Government of Gujarat’s notification no. GNV (30)/Env-10-2011-1941-E, dated 22nd January, 2013. The Government of Gujarat has also specified Gujarat Environment Management Institute’s Laboratory, to be called as GEMI’s Laboratory.

GEMI’s Laboratory accredited by NABL, National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) is an autonomous body under the aegis of Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. NABL has been established with the objective to provide Government, Industry Associations and Industry in general with a scheme for third-party assessment of the quality and technical competence of testing and calibration laboratories. Government of India has authorised NABL as the sole accreditation body for Testing and Calibration laboratories.

The Laboratory has been accredited by NATIONAL ACCREDITATION BOARD FOR TESTING & CALLIBRATION OF LABORATORIES, vide Certificate no, T-3297, dated 09-02-2015 for chemical testing and certificate no. T- 3333, dated 09-03-2015 for Biological testing. Renewal of Accreditation was done vide certificate no. T-5157 from 09/02/2017 valid till 08/02/2019.

The Institute and its Laboratory have also been certified for ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 i.e. Quality Management System and Environment Management System respectively from certifying body Bureau of Veritas, Mumbai vide certificate no. IND15.5813N/QE, dated 03-07-2015

The lab carries out analysis of Air, Water, and Wastewater samples as per APHA and ISO standards. The Institute has developed its own protocol for monitoring, sampling and transport of samples and the same has been approved by the Government of Gujarat vide letter no. ENV-102013-299-E, dated 24-02-2014 under the provisions of Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and Air (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1981.

The GEMI’s laboratory has also become the first laboratory to carry out sampling of soil from environment point of view. The Soil Samples are analyzed as per the Soil Manual compiled by the Institute and also acquired NOC from Agriculture Department.

As per Guidelines for Recognition of Environmental Laboratory under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 (Appendix-22), proposal has been submitted to the concerned authority for declaration as Environmental Laboratory to GEMI’s Laboratory.

The Laboratory carries out analysis of Water, Waste Water, Air, Soil and Microbiology vary from 600 to 800 samples per month. Around 500 of there are from private projects. To cater to the project at Ankleshwar, GEMI has also set up a small laboratory in the premises of Narmada Clean Tech Limited (NCTL) at Ankleshwar. The laboratory at Ankleshwar carries out analysis of around 450 samples per month.

During the period under report the laboratory has acquired various Equipments/Instruments that carry out analysis related with the above.
